Over our three decades in operation we have developed and commercialized a number of innovative products that have created real market value:
- Innovative packaging using the company’s BreatheWay® membrane technology, that enabled our fresh-cut specialty packaged vegetable subsidiary, Apio, to grow from a small base at acquisition in 1999 into a leading North American packaged fresh-cut vegetable supplier.
- Innovative seed coatings that enables farmers to plant crops weeks earlier than they used to, allowing them to achieve higher yields by better managing planting cycles and natural variations in weather and enabled seed companies to optimize seed production for future years, all while achieving greater efficiency and reducing risk.
- Innovative biomaterials such as hyaluronan for cataract surgery for which Landec’s subsidiary, Lifecore Biomedical, pioneered the manufacture of this biopolymer through a fermentation process.
- Innovative chemical polymers and additives that trigger rheological property changes for personal care products that are now used in over 50 commercial products world-wide, trigger release of catalysts for thermosets like epoxies and unsaturated polyesters and trigger adhesion changes for temporary positioning adhesive tapes in production of electronic components.
Landec works to generate new product concepts, synthesize new materials, formulate them into model products, demonstrate performance that yields a competitive advantage, and brings the product from laboratory to commercial scale. This process has been implemented within Landec and also with partner companies.
