Innovation
Landec uses its expertise in polymer science and application development to develop and commercialize innovative products either through our market leading partners or through our subsidiary businesses. Over our two decades in operation we have developed and commercialized a number of innovative products that have created real
market value:

- Innovative packaging that enabled our fresh-cut specialty packaged vegetable subsidiary, Apio, to grow from $5 million dollars a year in value-added business to over $170 million dollars per year.
- Innovative seed coatings that allow farmers to plant crops weeks earlier than they used to, enabling them to achieve higher yields by better managing planting cycles and natural variations in weather.
- Innovative biomaterials such as hyaluronan for cataract surgery. Landec’s subsidiary Lifecore Biomedical pioneered the manufacture of this biopolymer
through a fermentation process.

- Innovative drug delivery formulations prepared through simple, gentle routes that preserve the biological activity of hard-to-handle drug substances such as proteins and peptides.
- Innovative rheological control properties for personal care products that are now used in over 50 commercial products world-wide.
Landec works with its partners to generate new product concepts, synthesize new materials, formulate them into model products, demonstrate performance that yields a competitive advantage, and bring the product from laboratory to commercial scale.
