Triggered Properties

Intelimer Polymers® can be customized to abruptly change physical characteristics in response to an
environmental trigger.

For instance, Intelimer Polymers can change from a non adhesive state to a highly tacky, adhesive state; from an impermeable state to a highly permeable state; or from a solid state to a low viscosity fluid state. These transitions result from the architecture of the Intelimer polymer chain, which includes crystallizable side chains attached to the polymer backbone. The side chains switch between crystalline and amorphous morphologies as the defined trigger point is crossed. This process is repeatedly reversible. Trigger points can be tuned over a wide range. Temperature triggers, for example, can be set from 0 to 105°C and pH triggers can be tuned to modify release at high or low pH.

Sample applications: Membranes and coatings with thermally triggered permeability of gases and liquids; oral medications with an active ingredient that can be released at a specific pH; adhesives that are thermally triggered to transition from sticky to non-sticky; rheological control additives that are activated when they reach skin temperature; catalyst that are released at a specified temperature.
